Seashells

My favorite place to go is the beach. The actual beach. I love to take in the smells, feel the sand on my feet, watch the waves, and when it's just right the sounds of the waves block out all other noise and distractions around. My senses are stimulated by nature alone, and at times even if I am not physically alone on the beach I can have moments alone with nature.

As a family, we enjoy a trip to the beach. We love to go and look for seashells. Each one of us has a different idea of what their ideal shell would look like. Each one with a different goal for what that shell would be used for.

Hmmm…take a moment and think about the way God created you. He did just that. He had a different idea of what each one of us would like, what each one of us would look like, and a different goal and plan for each of us.

Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever. Amen.
— 1 Peter 4:10‭-‬11 NIV

As I look at the shells on the beach, several characteristics of the shell stand out to me. One is whether or not the shell is complete – and if it is  broken, how much of the shell remains.

Second, the roughness of  the outside of the shell.

Third, the smoothness and colors of the beauty of the inside of the shell.

A seashell was the outer part of a body. At one point inside this body lived a creature without a backbone, typically a marine mollusk.

Do you not know that your bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own;
— 1 Corinthians 6:19 NIV

It makes me think about my own body…temples not only for my organs and most importantly for my heart but also for the spirit.  The weathered shells make me think about how weathered my own body can get, taking hits from the environment, at times tossed around the sea.

Your body, protecting your organs, your heart, but also your spirit, your soul.

Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.
— Proverbs 4:23 NIV

You must care for your soul. To do this, you have to set your mind on God, yet, you can not do it alone, if you do it alone like the broken shells you may end up in many pieces. But if you cry out to Him for guidance, for protection, for peace, He will set your mind on His word.

For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live. For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God. The Spirit you received does not make you slaves, so that you live in fear again; rather, the Spirit you received brought about your adoption to sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.”
— Romans 8:13‭-‬15 NIV

Care for your soul. Let God provide the protection to your body, your heart, your soul. Open the bible, read His word, read what He says about you. Spend time seeking Him. He is seeking you already. Set your eyes not on the environment around you, but on the words your creator has said about you.

Breathe

As a physical therapist, I educate my patients about breathing each day.

Did you know we become very inefficient at breathing?

Over the years, pain, posture, fear, internal or external life circumstances can affect our breathing.

We end up holding our breath more often than not.

Don’t believe me? Take an hour to evaluate yourself? Maybe you don’t even need an hour, maybe by the time you read the end of this blog, you will already see how you aren’t breathing.

Self awareness, it’s huge, It’s one of the first things I like to educate my patients on. We go through the days so easily, just going through the motions. From a movement standpoint, it's easy not to notice how we stand up from a chair, pour that glass of orange juice, open the door.  Rarely do we ask ourselves, why or how.

God awareness…hmm..that is something even harder than self awareness.

Then the Lord God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.
— Genesis 2:7 NIV

Pause, think about the beauty of this. God formed man, God formed you. God breathed life into you. He chose you. He gave you breath of life, but more than that He gives your breath every day. Every day he chooses you. Do you choose Him? Do you pause and thank him for your breath?

Do you have difficulty thanking Him for your breath?

Go to Him.

This is what the Sovereign Lord says to these bones: I will make breath enter you, and you will come to life. I will attach tendons to you and make flesh come upon you and cover you with skin; I will put breath in you, and you will come to life. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’ ” So I prophesied as I was commanded. And as I was prophesying, there was a noise, a rattling sound, and the bones came together, bone to bone. I looked, and tendons and flesh appeared on them and skin covered them, but there was no breath in them.
— Ezekiel 37:5‭-‬8 NIV

Do you feel dry? Ask Him to breathe His breath in you. He is waiting for you to run to Him to fall into His arms and allow His breath to fill your lungs.

Then he said to me, “Prophesy to the breath; prophesy, son of man, and say to it, ‘This is what the Sovereign Lord says: Come, breath, from the four winds and breathe into these slain, that they may live.’ ” So I prophesied as he commanded me, and breath entered them; they came to life and stood up on their feet—a vast army.
— Ezekiel 37:9‭-‬10 NIV

He will fill you with hope. He will provide for His will in your life. He has not left you alone.

But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
— John 14:26 NIV

Take this moment, breathe. You matter. Your breath is not your own. You have assistance available to your breath.

If you choose, God will assist your breath. He has already chosen to give you breath.

If you’ve already chosen Him, Go to Him again. See what His breath has in store for you next. How far will He want His breath to go in you for Him?

Power

Do you ever stop to think about your power? Who in your path of life is there for you to empower? Who in the path is there to empower you? Do you ever think about where your power comes from?

One important role and responsibility of mine is to be a mother. Whew! Can we just sit in what a responsibility this is?!?

One of my responsibilities in this role requires me to follow one calling God has placed in my life: to empower others.

The power of my voice with my children, it carries such weight.

I fail often.

My children are young and they spend much time with me, which means they see the best of me and the worst of me. They are there when I share carefree joy of playing with them in the backyard or I fall apart over the messy house.

Yet, in both the best of me and the worst of me moments, especially as a Christian mother I have a responsibility to teach them, to empower them.

But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. I persevered in demonstrating among you the marks of a true apostle, including signs, wonders and miracles.
— 2 Corinthians 12:9‭-‬10‭, ‬12 NIV

I learn the most in the “worst of me” moments. It amazes me how some days I turn to God when I feel weak right away, and other days it takes for me to be at my “wits end” to finally surrender the situation to Him.

The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
— John 10:10 NIV

In those harder moments, those are the days I forget where my power comes from. Those are the days I need to fall at my Heavenly Father’s feet, surrender the struggle, find peace in His arms, and let Him empower me.

God is waiting for me to fall at His feet, waiting for me to ask Him for power, for His will in my life.

I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know him better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which he has called you, the riches of his glorious inheritance in his holy people, and his incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength he exerted when he raised Christ from the dead and seated him at his right hand in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come.
— Ephesians 1:17‭-‬21 NIV

And it’s in those moments after surrender, where I have another responsibility. I have the responsibility after my moments of where I see failure in myself, to show them how to grow from failure. It’s in those moments where they see me fail, that I need to show them where God comes in. And I need to share the power He gave me in my surrender with them.

Where are the weaknesses in your life? Where do you have hardness in your heart? Where do you lack self control?

What would surrendering to God look like for you?

Where can you show others where your power comes from?

If you're not a believer reading this, have you thought about God in this way?

Fear

Teach me your way, Lord, that I may rely on your faithfulness; give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name.
— Psalms 86:11 NIV

Fear…We all have it. Each of us fear different things. Fear of heights, water, illness, birds :-), spiders,  falling, public speaking, pain, death, failure, acceptance, loneliness….this list can go on and on.

Some of our fears appear closer to the surface where other fears are uncomfortable and deep, and at times we may never realize they are driving us.

Fear can stand in the way of the Holy Spirit in our lives. The voices of fear drive out those voices of peace, comfort, joy, love, and gentleness. Fear too can make a way for disobedience of following the spirit in our lives.

Do you ever pause to think, what does God say about this fear that I am holding on to?

Does fear drive you? Is all fear bad? When can fear as a driver be good?

When I think about “good” ways that fear was a driver, three women immediately come to mind.  Rahab, Elizabeth, and Mary. Each of them had a situation where they had to decide to fear man or fear God.

A story I revisit over and over again throughout my life, is the story of Rahab.

If you aren’t sure where to find Rahab, you will find the beginning of her story in Joshua Chapter 2. (Click the link, Open the app, dust off the bible, head to your bookmarks, GO read it for the first time or again for the 50th.)

Here in her story is where we understand what fear drives her actions…

8 Before the spies lay down for the night, she went up on the roof 9 and said to them, “I know that the Lord has given you this land and that a great fear of you has fallen on us, so that all who live in this country are melting in fear because of you. 10 We have heard how the Lord dried up the water of the Red Sea[a] for you when you came out of Egypt, and what you did to Sihon and Og, the two kings of the Amorites east of the Jordan, whom you completely destroyed.[b] 11 When we heard of it, our hearts melted in fear and everyone’s courage failed because of you, for the Lord your God is God in heaven above and on the earth below.
— Joshua 2: 8-11

Rather than fearing the King of Jericho, she feared God. She chose to hide the spies. Lie to the King’s men of Jericho. This is not where her story ends.

17 Now the men had said to her, “This oath you made us swear will not be binding on us 18 unless, when we enter the land, you have tied this scarlet cord in the window through which you let us down, and unless you have brought your father and mother, your brothers and all your family into your house. 19 If any of them go outside your house into the street, their blood will be on their own heads; we will not be responsible. As for those who are in the house with you, their blood will be on our head if a hand is laid on them. 20 But if you tell what we are doing, we will be released from the oath you made us swear.”
“Agreed,” she replied. “Let it be as you say.”
— Joshua 2:17:20

Her faith is what stands out in her story. Faith, not fear is what the story tells. Her faith paved the way for the future, the coming of our Savior. It’s her Faith that we see.

Joshua said to the two men who had spied out the land, “Go into the prostitute’s house and bring her out and all who belong to her, in accordance with your oath to her.” 23 So the young men who had done the spying went in and brought out Rahab, her father and mother, her brothers and sisters and all who belonged to her. They brought out her entire family and put them in a place outside the camp of Israel.
24 Then they burned the whole city and everything in it, but they put the silver and gold and the articles of bronze and iron into the treasury of the Lord’s house. 25 But Joshua spared Rahab the prostitute, with her family and all who belonged to her, because she hid the men Joshua had sent as spies to Jericho—and she lives among the Israelites to this day.
— Joshua 6:22-25

What uncomfortable fears are holding you back?

Where is the voice of God drawing you nearer to Him and pushing you further away from your fears?

Where could God take your life if you let go of the fears that are holding you back from the life He has planned for you?

Take some time, spend some space with Rahab in Joshua Chapter 2. Search how far her story goes.

Spend time into Luke 1, see if Elizabeth or Mary are people who you can relate to. AND as you spend that time in God’s word, take some space in silence to listen to what He might be saying to you?

Co-workers in His Kingdom

What, after all, is Apollos? And what is Paul? Only servants, through whom you came to believe—as the Lord has assigned to each his task. I planted the seed, Apollos watered it, but God has been making it grow. So neither the one who plants nor the one who waters is anything, but only God, who makes things grow.
— 1 Corinthians 3:5-7 NIV

I have a black thumb. I have for many years. When we first moved into our home, I would attempt to plant flowers but I could never keep them alive. I wouldn't take the time to water them.

My husband, on the other hand, is great at planting flowers, perennials, trees, and bushes, and if my help was needed, I would water them.  They will grow.

It's funny in a way, when I plant something I don't take the time to water it. When he plants something I would take the time to water it.

The one who plants and the one who waters have one purpose, and they will each be rewarded according to their own labor.
— 1 Corinthians 3:8‭ NIV

This year has been different, I became interested in plants. Our house has been so dry in the winter, it inspired me to get some house plants. My first plant came from my neighbor who was ready for one of her plants to have a new home.

This plant has now been joined by two other plants. My kids are having a great time helping me water them and so far we have kept two plants alive.

But ….my third plant. It is not doing so well. I over-watered it.

Yes…I over watered it.

It was a plant that did not require much water at all and even in my sparse watering, I have just about killed it by watering it too much—only did I find out the reason after talking about it to a gardener.

The experience of having house plants has made me think about relationships and God’s Kingdom.

Tending to plants, like relationships with other people, takes time, learning, gaining an understanding of the proper care, and nurturing. Plants, however, are “easier” , they don’t talk back, they haven’t hurt you, they don’t correct you when you are wrong, they don’t have past hurts that you unknowingly tread upon. But just as you really do need plants, you really do need other people.

Are you allowing God to fill your life with people?

For we are co-workers in God’s service; you are God’s field, God’s building. By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ.
— 1 Corinthians 3:9‭-‬11 NIV

God is the soil you are to be grounded in. He is the creator of you and me, just as He has created plants. God is the only one that knows exactly the amount of care, nurturing, water, sunlight, and food that you need. Isn’t that amazing?

He is the one who makes you grow, who tells you when it's time to grow. It’s your choice to say yes to His call. Is He telling you it’s time to grow?

Can you think of a time in your life where maybe God wanted you to grow and you said no? Or maybe, there was a time you said yes, and maybe it’s time to say yes AGAIN.

He also knows WHO you need in your life, and not just who you need in your life for you, but who you need in your life for HIS purpose, for HIS kingdom. He is the one in control. It is your choice to open your eyes and your heart to see where He IS working.

For me and my plants, it’s always been easier, fun, and more successful  when either 1. I was watering someone else’s work  or 2. I had help to water my plants. (Funny, the plant that is dying, I had been watering it all on my own.)

Would His purpose in your life be easier, fun, and more successful, if you had help from those He placed around you?

If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. If it is burned up, the builder will suffer loss but yet will be saved—even though only as one escaping through the flames.
— 1 Corinthians 3:12‭-‬15 NIV

What if it’s time for you to get a houseplant?

How is God calling you? What seed are you trying to plant? Who around you can help water it?  Where does He want you to work with others to share your talents/gifts/abilities for HIS Kingdom?

Don’t you know that you yourselves are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in your midst?
— 1 Corinthians 3:16 NIV

In His time

He has made everything beautiful in its time. He has also set eternity in the human heart; yet no one can fathom what God has done from beginning to end
— Ecclesiastes 3:11 NIV

The previous owner of our home was quite a gardener. She had this lovely flower bed, full of perennials. One of the types of flowers she had planted in this bed was a poppy flower. I found so much joy out of these flowers.

I don’t know much about poppy flowers, but mine seemed to have a short blooming life. Sometime in the beginning of spring this long stem would sprout, then an odd shaped pod would appear, (the first year I probably pulled them thinking they were weeds). They stay in this odd pod shape for what feels like forever, then just like that a beautiful, joyful flower appears.

In my garden the poppy’s never seemed to bloom at the same time, so each morning as I enjoyed the morning view from my kitchen window, I would get a surprise about which one bloomed. The flower only sprouted for a short period of time, which felt like 3 days max then was gone.

Each year the same thing happened again and again. Last year though we had made some outside changes and we had to dig up the flower garden. This was the first year without the blooming poppy flowers.

I am grateful for my time with the flowers though, it makes me think about God's timing and how He tends to our needs just as He tends to the needs of the flowers.

Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up.

Galatians 6:9 NIV

Just like the timing of when the poppy flower blooms, He predicts when you bloom. He keeps you in His pod, rooted in Him, if you allow it.  And just like when the flower fades He is still tending to the flower, just as He tends to us as we fade from Him.

Just as He knows the needs of the flowers to return each year, He knows your needs, He knows how to care for you and help you grow to serve His purpose. Just like roots of the flowers need the dirt, you need that time with your roots planted in Him.

How long do you need to be rooted in Him before you pop?  How will you pop? Will you pop at the same time as the others around you, or will you be a lone poppy that pops in your own time?

And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.

Romans 8:28 NIV

If He invests that much care into the poppy flower, something only bringing joy for several days, just think about what care He is putting into you.

But do not forget this one thing, dear friends: With the Lord a day is like a thousand years, and a thousand years are like a day. The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

2 Peter 3:8‭-‬9 NIV

Will you surrender to His timing? Will you allow Him to work towards the beauty He has planned for your life, for His kingdom?

Even if you feel that you have dug up the roots and you, like my poppy flowers, can never return, God's love is constant and you can always run to Him. You can always replant your roots in His words. He will care for your needs, if you let Him.

All He wants is your heart. He will tend to it, if you give it to Him. Will you give Him your heart today, either for the first time or millionth time? Will you stay rooted in His word even when your stem is still below the surface?

Living Water That Shapes You

The Lord will guide you continually, giving you water when you are dry and restoring your strength. You will be like a well-watered garden, like an ever-flowing spring.
— Isaiah 58:11 NLT

A good friend once told me, “The grand canyon in all its majesty, was created by the simple unending flow of water.” When he spoke these words to me, “living water” was the first thought that came into my mind. “Follow the living water” is what I heard.

This thought, about water shaping the land and contouring the ground, makes me think how the living water that is within us, shapes us. The Holy Spirit shapes us, if we allow it. It makes our old self die and creates us new.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
— 2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV

About a year ago, I was guided to living a spirit-led life. I had seen my old ways, and was getting a sense of how guilt and shame was holding me back. I was still not living fully into the person I was made to be, (whoever that person still is to be).

For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.
— Habakkuk 2:14 NIV

I started a journey in reading the bible in a year.  I am almost done, but still have about a month to go. As I read, I know I need to go back and read, and read, and read, and dive into more of it along this journey. But reading as a whole, I feel like a bigger picture is being shown to my eyes. Longings are being comforted in one way or another by HIS words. I am refocusing my mind.

Although, many times I stumble and fall, and I let fear creep back in, but I know where I am to look to get back up. He is shaping me by His words. He is working on my character. He is guiding me and carrying me and picking me back up, and letting me start each day new, when I turn to Him.

He is doing that for you too. Each day, we start anew. Each day we have a choice, to allow the living water to shape us. To allow the Holy Spirit to be heard.

But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
— John 14:26

Each day we can have the opportunity to learn all that God has said to us. Will you allow it? Will you explore what is holding you back, fear, shame, guilt, anger, jealous, greed,....? Those things are not from above, that is not who He says you are.

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,  gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
— Galatians 5:22-23 NIV

Our journeys are not without struggles, but our struggles are not without HIM. You can go to Him at any point. He is always with you by the Spirit that lives in you. The living water can shape us, through the struggles, through the darkness we feel or experience, big or small challenges, because He made each of us unique.

Wherever you are in your journey, even if you are not yet on this path, you still have access. You still have the ability to learn, you still have the ability to choose the path. If you are on the journey, you still have the ability to go farther, because He is with you. Each day you can make this choice.

What questions come from His words? What words make you uncomfortable? How does your character need to be shaped? Will you choose to let Him shape you each day? Will you choose to get back up, get in, let it go, and continue on your journey for the bigger picture?

Ennegram In Real Life

You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar. You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways. Before a word is on my tongue you, Lord, know it completely. You hem me in behind and before, and you lay your hand upon me. Such knowledge is too wonderful for me, too lofty for me to attain.
— Psalms 139:16-6 NIV

One of the first posts in this blog section told information on how you can get to know YOU better by taking an enneagram test.

Did YOU do it?

I intentionally started my journey finding myself better in 2020, I had become a version of myself that I just did not like. It was not who I wanted to be.

If only you, God, would slay the wicked! Away from me, you who are bloodthirsty! They speak of you with evil intent; your adversaries misuse your name. Do I not hate those who hate you, Lord, and abhor those who are in rebellion against you? I have nothing but hatred for them; I count them my enemies Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
— Psalms 139:19-24

After a conversation about the enneagram I took a test.

WOW! That Hurts!  It was a little too revealing of the ways this tool described me. I am a 2. One of the things about a 2 is that it's hard for us to take criticism. OUCH!  But, after reading the words that hurt a little, there were also words that brought comfort, validation, and clarity. I wanted to go deeper into this.

So, What NEXT?

I wanted to be the best of me. I wanted to know the WHY behind my actions, to become more intentional. Part of what is explained in the enneagram is how each number goes towards another number in “health” and in “stress”. It explains our characteristics in those situations. To better understand all that I had found and learn to apply it, I read some books about the Enneagram.

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there. If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast, If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me and the light become night around me, even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you.
— Psalms 139: 7-12 NIV

This tool of the Enneagram has helped guide me in my every day, there are so many stressors in life. Some stress is very much front and center, some stress hides deep within our souls that we didn’t even know it existed. The enneagram tells us about our core motives, lists multiple subtypes for each number, and so many other areas to explore to help you to become the BEST YOU, and discover who you are!

One book, The Sacred Enneagram, I learned how my enneagram number could help me to best receive God and listen to HIS voice.  This has made the greatest impact on my life. Since this discovery, I have become much more intentional with my time with Him. I better understand how I can get the most out of my time with Him. In those daily stressors, I better understand how I can seek His comfort.

Why is this important?

For me, through my listening, through my understanding of who I was, and how to work towards the BEST me. I heard from God, who he calls me first. He calls me HIS DAUGHTER. I am part of HIS Kingdom, and I have a better understanding that the BEST me, is to DO HIS work, the BEST that I can with His guidance.

For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be. How precious to me are your thoughts, God! How vast is the sum of them! Were I to count them, they would outnumber the grains of sand—when I awake, I am still with you.
— Psalms 139:13:18 NIV

I, like you, are not to do this alone. I am to do this listening to HIS word, following His WILL for my life, and to walk with other brothers and sisters in Christ to do HIS Work.

What’s holding you back from moving towards the best YOU? Maybe you have done the enneagram before, but in my journey, I have found I have to go back again, and again to be reminded of my WHY, just like I need to do with my Heavenly Father, go back to Him again and again to remember WHY.

Here’s your chance again to move in the direction of the BEST you, take the test, your Father is waiting for you to find out who He made you to be, your brothers and sisters need you to work towards your BEST to do HIS work. This could be the start, this could be the next step, or this could help you figure out what is holding you back.
